Organic Synthesis

Reduction

Mechanism:

Amines and ammonia are generally sufficiently nucleophilic to condense with carbonyls of ketones or aldehydes, to form imines. Then to be reduced by sodium borohydride or Sodium cyanoborohydride. The latter will only reduce the imine without reducing any remaining carbonyl.
